Description

The coyote (Canis latrans) has one of the widest distributions of any North American mammal. Its range extends from the Pacific to Atlantic Oceans and from Alaska to Panama (Young and Jackson, 1951; Bekoff, 1977; Hall, 1981; Mendez et al., 1981; Wozencraft, 2005). Its distribution in Central America and Mexico was summarized recently by Hidalgo-Mihart et al. (2004). Records cited for Guatemala were based upon visual and auditory observations and there was no known specimen of the coyote recorded in any collections (T. J. McCarthy, pers. comm.). In this paper, we review previous observational records of coyotes and document for the first time a specimen from Guatemala. The earliest record of coyotes from Guatemala apparently was based upon visual records. Alston (1879-1882) reported observations of coyotes from Hacienda San Geronimo, Vera Paz (=San Jeronimo, Baja Verapaz), and this record was cited by McCarthy and Perez (2006). Nelson (1932) reported that E. A. Goldman referred to coyotes from Hacienda Chancol, which is in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes.
